What does a demolition operative do?
Demolition operatives are responsible for carrying out a range of different tasks, including dismantling buildings and structures, carrying out salvage operations, and removing hazardous materials from environments. And with average salaries ranging from £22,000 to £32,000, depending on experience, this is a career that offers many prospects too.
Day-to-day tasks
As part of your role as a demolition operative you will be responsible for completing various tasks, depending on the company you’re working for, the project at hand, and your individual job role. Common tasks include:
- Working as a labourer to prepare sites.
- Separating reusable materials.
- Dismantling roof tops, removing windows and doors from buildings and stripping out all types of fittings.
- Working on fragile projects that require careful stripping.
- Cutting steel framework at heights.
- Ensuring that all demolition practices are safe and secure.
Any job in the construction or demolition industry is physically demanding and it often requires working in tough outdoor environments, in all weathers. However, there are also many opportunities to progress into roles such as site supervisor and management.

Research the industry
Before pursuing a career as a demolition operative, it’s important to research the industry and gain a solid understanding of what the job entails. This includes researching the different types of demolition work, the tools and equipment used, and the safety protocols that are in place to protect workers.
Develop the necessary skills
Being a demolition operative requires a variety of skills, including attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure. You’ll also need to be comfortable working with heavy machinery and power tools.
Stay up-to-date on industry developments
The demolition industry is constantly evolving, and it’s important to stay up to date on the latest developments in the field. This can include attending training seminars and courses.
Get qualified
If you’re a school leaver considering a career in construction or demolition, completing a college course or apprenticeship is a great route into the industry. Both of these options will provide you with the skills, knowledge and expertise required to become an accomplished demolition operative. Popular courses include:

Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills (You will need 2 or less GCSEs at grades 3 to 1)

Level 2 Diploma in Construction Operations (You will need 2 or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3)

Level 3 Diploma in Demolition (You will need 4 to 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4)
If you’re entering the industry as a career change candidate, please keep in mind that to work as a demolition operative in the UK, you will typically need to obtain the following certifications:

CCDO (Certificate of Competence for Demolition Operatives): This is a mandatory certification for demolition operatives in the UK. To obtain a CCDO card, you will need to complete a training course and pass a health and safety test.

Asbestos Awareness: Asbestos is commonly found in older buildings and can pose a serious health risk if not handled properly. As a demolition operative, it’s important to have a basic understanding of asbestos and how to handle it safely.

CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Card: A CSCS card is not mandatory for demolition operatives, but it is often required by employers or clients. To obtain a CSCS card, you will need to pass a health and safety test and have a relevant qualification, such as the CCDO.
Don’t forget that, regardless of your age, you can explore the possibility of doing an apprenticeship within a demolition company. You’ll start as a general operative and will have the opportunity to work your way up. General requirements to complete an apprenticeship in the demolition industry include GCSEs in English and Maths. Please note that you must be over 18 to do apprenticeship with Hughes and Salvidge for insurance reasons.
