Hughes and Salvidge have completed our project to demolish former student accommodation blocks at The University of Portsmouth’s Langstone Campus.

We won a competitive tender process to be awarded the contract to complete the demolition of several large buildings within the former Student Village in the Eastern area of the City of Portsmouth.

Student accommodation at the Langstone campus closed in July, 2018, and with the University deeming the buildings to be beyond economical repair, along with concerns they could be used unlawfully, the University decided to demolish the buildings.

Our scope of works on all buildings included asbestos removal, a comprehensive soft-strip, demolition of structures to slab level, backfilling of internal floor ducts, crushing and removal of all inert hard arisings, and disposal of all other waste arising from the works.

During the soft-strip and demolition phases of work waste streams were segregated to maximise recycling potential from the project.

We also worked in collaboration and co-operation with the client and our specialist asbestos removal contractor to successfully manage the implications surrounding the discovery of un-surveyed, and therefore unexpected, asbestos once our works commenced. The additional asbestos was effectively tested and removed, in accordance with HSE legislation, at the same time as minimising impact on the programme or budget.

The site was also in close proximity to existing sports pitches and changing facilities that needed to remain in use for the University and was also neighboured by a dense residential area and fields that were a key nesting area for migrating Brent Geese.

We therefore adopted strict control measures during our works to minimise dust, noise and vibration so as not to cause nuisance or disturbance. We also had concise traffic management and environmental plans in place to reduce any impact on the surrounding roads to the site.

On completion of our works we left the site in a clean, tidy and secure state and to the satisfaction of our client.
