FAÇADE RETENTION

Retain the architectural character of a building by preserving its original outer walls while strategically removing internal walls, columns, and floors.

Façade retention offers a unique opportunity to retain the original character of historic architecture. It is a complex process which requires meticulous attention to detail, close monitoring and extreme precision.

OUR FAÇADE RETENTION AND REMOVAL SERVICES

Hughes and Salvidge have the knowledge and expertise to ensure your façade retention project is carried out safely, efficiently, and in a cost-effective manner. All activities undertaken by us will be in accordance with the approved programme of work, phased operations and safe demolition techniques and the activities will be planned and undertaken in line with the Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Project Health and Safety Plan and Environmental Plan. Here are some of the measures we put in place to protect a building’s structural integrity.

Temporary Weather Proofing

The façade retention process often involves leaving parts of a building temporarily exposed. Where needed, we will implement protective measures that will shield its exposed elements from the weather to prevent any potential damage during the construction process. This can involve covering exposed sections with large, weather resistant tarps or erecting temporary roofing structures. Our experts will continuously monitor any weather proofing measures in place to ensure that there are no breaches and quickly repair any that occur. After the construction process is complete, any temporary weatherproofing measures are removed.

Temporary Propping Services

The use of structural support systems are employed during façade retention to ensure the safety and stability of the outer structure. We have a wealth of experience in designing bespoke support systems made of steel that are strategically placed to provide additional support to the retained façade. This stage of the process prevents unintended movement or collapse during construction activity. Throughout the project, the support system will be monitored and adjusted to ensure that it remains effective. Once the project is complete, temporary supports will be carefully removed to allow the permanent structural elements to take over any load-bearing responsibilities.

Underpinning

When alterations are being made to the structure of a building during the façade retention process, underpinning is a technique used to strengthen and support its foundations. This provides additional stability and ensures that the foundation can withstand the altered load distribution resulting from construction activity. An engineer will conduct a thorough assessment of the existing foundation before underpinning is undertaken to determine the most suitable support method. The removal of underpinning depends on which type was applied.
