Heathrow Airport
Hughes and Salvidge have been based at London Heathrow Airport for over three decades and are the only demolition contractor with a permanent on-site presence. Our projects vary from terminal and pier demolition, strip-outs, and link bridge removals to demolition of multi-storey buildings and warehouse-type units.
Hughes and Salvidge are the only demolition contractor to have a permanent on-site presence at Heathrow Airport and have been a first tier supplier of demolition services to all major UK airport sites for over thirty consecutive years, having completed hundreds of projects.
Our global partners value our expertise on Airport projects. We bring professionalism together with expert management of service clearances, traffic logistics, waste management and health, safety and environmental controls. We provide a selection of projects below that we have carried out at Heathrow Airport.

Flagship Projects
With on-going works, including the demolition of Terminal 1 and the first phase of the CPC, our specialist teams continue to be busy both air and landside. This has been built on the years of successfully completed works on complex projects in this sensitive environment.
Gate Gourmet - Our role as Principal Contractor for the demolition of the Former Gate Gourmet Catering Base meant working in extremely close proximity to Terminal 4 and surrounding infrastructure. Consisting of a steel framed main building at a higher level, and wrapped on 3 sides on a lower elevation by steel structures with metal cladding externally, this project included service disconnections and protection to and Internal substation.
Starlight Point - The dismantling of the Starlight Point modular office complex required us to work with specialist subcontractors from our own supply chain to complete this project on time and to the client’s complete satisfaction. Starlight Point was a purpose-built collection of 309 portacabins that were built as an office space for several contractors working in and around Terminals 1, 2, and 3.
There were 308 movements over 50 working week days to complete this project, with zero incidents. The units were generally 3m wide and sat 4.6m high on the transportation so close stakeholder communication was essential between the project and Heathrow roads and grounds.

Challenges
In aerospace demolition at UK airports, our experience highlights the critical challenge of controlling Foreign Object Debris (FOD) within strict airside and landside environments, requiring daily cleaning, frequent inspections, and robust barriers to prevent debris escape that could compromise safety and disrupt airport operations.
Our airport demolition approach addresses this by embedding rigorous planning and safety controls into every phase, including strategic consultation with airport operations and tightly managed debris containment practices that minimise risk and keep demolition work integrated with live airport protocols.
Heathrow Documentation (Passes, LCA (Licensing Contractors Approval), Vehicle Passes, Permit management, Training course.
Having and experienced Heathrow team who know these systems and regularly attend Heathrow update meetings to ensure we are up to date with any changes to the regulations / Documentation.
Interface with the public – Sometimes we must revert sites to their original state to ensure that Heathrow operations are not affected and the public can move freely through the airport with no operational impacts.
Clear plans, realistic time frames, Trusted supervisors, and teams. Experienced operatives with years of Heathrow experience.
