Health and Safety at Work Day 2023

Health and Safety

Health and Safety at Work Day is observed around the world on 28th April each year. It is dedicated not only to highlighting health and safety in the workplace, but to promoting a wider culture of safety throughout organisations. Long-term, these cultures will reduce and prevent work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities.

Demolition, and the wider construction industry, is high-risk. With thousands of tonnes of materials, machinery, equipment, and sometimes explosives involved, there will always be an element of danger. Mitigating this risk as much as possible is imperative, regardless of turnover, budget, or standing in the industry.

Hughes and Salvidge have worked on projects of all sizes in our almost 60 year history, with the safety of all stakeholders being the top priority each and every time. This commitment extends to our staff, clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and all those in the areas surrounding our sites.

In large industrial and nuclear decommissioning projects, the risks associated with the work are orders of magnitude greater. These projects involve the removal of complex structures and materials that require specialised knowledge, skills, and equipment. Exposure to hazardous materials and structural instability are among the risks that need to be assessed and accounted for before, during, and after a project.

To address these risks, Hughes and Salvidge's Safe Hands Initiative makes it easy to keep up with and share best practice in an ever-evolving environment. By collecting actual occupational experiences, we continually learn, applying real-world lessons and going beyond theory and legal minimum requirements.

Health and safety is paramount, and it is crucial to prioritise safety to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment. This involves strict procedures for handling hazardous materials, detailed decommissioning plans, and measures to prevent unauthorised access to the site, among other robust and meticulous practices. By prioritising health and safety, contractors can create a safe and efficient decommissioning process that protects workers and the public.

We are committed to creating a safe working environment and mitigating the risks associated with our work, using our Safe Hands Initiative to continually learn and improve our practices.
