2022 - Year in Review

This year, Hughes and Salvidge have continued to grow, working on larger, more challenging projects for prestigious household names, expanding our Asbestos Removal division, and eyeing projects outside of the UK.

We’re excited about what’s to come in 2023, but first, let’s celebrate some highlights of 2022 from across Hughes and Salvidge.

A Busy Year

In 2022, Hughes and Salvidge have worked on over 75 live projects – these include long-term projects, smaller projects that were done and dusted in a matter of weeks, and multi-year endeavours continuing into 2023. We undertake projects in a variety of sectors across the whole of the UK, and 2022 has been no different.

Green is Good

Our Green Hands Initiative is an internal environmental strategy and action plan for Hughes and Salvidge. The plan includes seven key performance categories.

COSHH, Waste, Sustainability, Procurement, Environment, Health and Wellbeing, and Community. Each category covers one of the main targets currently identified through our existing Environmental Management System. Each performance category is made up of a series action points that allow us to see what we are doing well and provides us with steps for positive reinforcement, improvement and development.

Recent projects have required us to monitor our impact to water ph levels, ensure we do not impact floodplains, work over, and even in water. Specific mechanical demolition techniques are used to ensure minimal impact on the key areas identified during the scoping of the works.

Water is only one element we monitor as we factor in the individuality of each project. We also consider endangered or unique species of wildlife and monitor various areas of the environment, including air quality, noise, vibrations, and wind speed and direction. Pulling all this together with our waste control and recycling on site sets us on the right path as a business.

We continue to look for ways to develop this initiative, be it through new forms of fuel, such as hydrotreated vegetable (HVO) fuel, or by innovatively looking into methodologies to limit our impact on our journey to become a more sustainable business.

Community First

One deconstruction project yielded nearly £300,000 in additional social value according to figures provided by the local authority. Their own breakdown of this can be seen below:

“The social value output effectuated by Hughes and Salvidge Ltd activities as above, when applied to the National Themes, Outcomes and Measures (TOMs) model equates to £287,766. Financial proxies were generated by:

  • Using of 50% of local people in their workforce equated to £230,616.
  • By supplying training opportunities and visiting schools, £8,081 was delivered.
  • By using local supply chain, £35,600 was generated.
  • By donating volunteering resources £5,000.
  • By encouraging staff to volunteer their time, equated to £1,270.
  • By providing staff diversity, equality and inclusion training to both for staff and their supply chain £505.”

Celebration of Our People

Long-serving high reach operator Gary Longyear won Demolition Plant Operator of the year at the NFDC awards - very well deserved, we must say. With 25+ years of experience with Hughes and Salvidge, it’s no surprise that he knows what he’s doing, but it’s fantastic to see his talent acknowledged by the wider industry.

International Recognition

We were nominated for a World Demolition Award for a fifth time this year - as you are probably aware or can certainly guess, this is like the Oscars in the demolition industry. Our confidential project demolishing a Redundant Liquid Waste Treatment Plant was nominated in the Contract of the Year Over $1million category and, although we didn’t win, it was a great honour to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award.

We’d like to thank everyone inside and outside Hughes and Salvidge, including our teams at K&B Crushers, H&S Asbestos, and H&S Metals for making 2022 so successful.

All our offices and sites will be closed between 23rd December 2022 and 3rd January 2023, and we look forward to an even better 2023!
