Moorings Way Infants School

Two reception classes from Moorings Way Infant School were invited to visit our Langstone Campus – University of Portsmouth site, located approximately 15 minutes away.

The 4- and 5-year-olds met with our Demolition Site Manager, Pat Barter – known as Demo Pat in his Safety Hat – and our Group SHEQ Manager, Tony Jack, to find out about demolition and, most importantly, the dangers that demolition and construction sites can pose.

The children watched some of the multi-storey buildings come down and cheered the machine on from the park outside of our site compound, clad in our smallest PPE.

A few days later we received drawings of machines and “Demo Pat” and a big thank you card from the children.

Milton Park Junior School 

Hughes and Salvidge assisted the Autism Provision at Milton Park Junior School in raising funds for iPads and cases for the children to support their learning.

Studies show that this kind of technology can enhance an autistic child’s learner journey and improve their independence in performing functional activities.

We supported the Autism Provision at Milton Park Junior School by contributing our annual Christmas card donation of £100 to their iPad fund and donated a further £1000 to boost their funding drive.

Teacher in Charge, Philippa Pettitt expressed her thanks, “Thanks for all your support… we have put the money towards our iPad fund. As you can see from the photos the children are already enjoying the iPads.”

The Cedar School

Hughes and Salvidge completed a project at The Cedar School in Southampton, a school that works with children with complex special education needs and physical difficulties and provide a different approach to education for families in the local area.

The school was one of 261 schools nationwide to win a share of a £2.4 billion Government cash hand-out as part of its Priority School Building Programme aimed at rebuilding those schools “in need of urgent repair”.

The previous building suffered from leakages, asbestos, and the windows were in dire need of replacement amongst several other issues that required addressing.

The children enjoyed having the machines close by and regularly watched the works taking place from behind the site boundary. Our site team were even treated to personalised gingerbread biscuits complete with hard hats and hi-vis vests to help keep their strength up!

The children are now able to enjoy more playground space next to their brand-new school buildings. Other new facilities include a hydrotherapy pool and support therapy, sensory and physiotherapy areas as well as classrooms with group rooms, support areas for the children and a learning resource centre.
