Dismantling of Media Screen at The O2 Arena

Hughes and Salvidge completed the dismantling of a media screen, located on Peninsula Square at The O2 Arena in Greenwich, London, on behalf of JP Dunn.

The project included:

  • Soft strip works.
  • Installation of double scaffold handrail to entire internal perimeter of structure, on both first and second floors, wherever there are no existing adequate handrails.
  • Removal of glazing panels utilising crane with glass vacuum lifter.
  • Removal of LED screen modules.
  • Removal of composite cladding to rear elevation utilising crane with glass vacuum lifter.
  • Removal of steel frame structure utilising crane, flush with ground level.
  • Disposal of all waste arising from the works.

Prior to works, services were isolated and a Buried Services Plan drawn up for any live services buried in the ground.

No asbestos removal works were required on this project as the structure was built post-2000.

Double scaffold handrails were installed to the full internal perimeter of the structure, where existing adequate handrails were not present, to provide edge protection for after the external glazing had been removed.

There were 6 cantilevered beams situated just above the screen. The beams were linked by stainless steel CHS (circular hollow section). The beams were lifted down in one operation, by crane. The beams were slung from the crane, before operatives working from MEWPs  hot cut the beams close to the main structure. Operatives cut the beams from the MEWP basket positioned above the beams. Once all beams were severed from the main structure, they were placed in the lay-down area and cut up by Operatives into manageable sections, then loaded into metal bins.

The glass panes were lifted down by crane fitted with vacuum lifter. Lift Plans were provided by Think Logistics. With the crane in position, the vacuum lifter secured to the glass pane to be removed. Once confirmed via 2-way radio that the lifter was secure , operatives positioned on the inside of the structure released the glass pane by releasing the securing bolts. The glass pane was then lifted away from the structure and lowered into the designated lay-down area. All glass panes were systematically lifted down. The structure's cladding was also lifted down in the same manner, utilising the vacuum lifter.

Finally, the steel frame structure was lifted down in 9 sections. Each section was slung in accordance with Think Logistic’s Lift Plan, and operatives cut the steel to release each section of frame.

This 2-week project was completed on-time and on-budget to the complete satisfaction of the client.
