Hughes and Salvidge won a competitive tender process to be awarded the contract to demolish the former Ford Engine Plant Factory at Bridgend, South Wales.
Our Scope of Works included Professional Lead-In; Site Establishment; Soft Strip to Offices; Removal of Asbestos; Drain Down and COSHH Sweep through all Buildings; Demolition of water treatment area to allow remediation teams access; Demolition of main factory; Demolition of offices; Removal of slabs and foundations; Removal of significant area of basements across the footprint of the site; Subsequent Earthworks and Civil Engineering Associated with Basement Removals; Backfill and compact site to agreed regime.

Asbestos containing materials were identified within the asbestos surveys completed. All asbestos removal works were completed by our licenced asbestos removal division prior to any structural demolition of buildings.
There was a requirement to keep some live power on site for the first 3-4 months of site works to maintain power to other live buildings while the diversion was being arranged.
There were ecology restrictions with the local waterways to be considered.
Remediation works in hot spots were planned and carried out. These were factored into the planning and sequencing of works.
Sequence of Demolition - Stage 1
- Site establishment
- Securing site
- Installation of welfare, office, canteen, drying room, toilet and emergency muster provisions
- Isolation works to all buildings (where possible) marking of live services
- Final agreement on methodologies, plans and permits

Stage 2
- Asbestos removal operatives are on site carrying removal works
- Demolition operatives carrying out soft strip activities internally
- Plant delivered to site to being works on two fronts
- Team one – commencing demolition to the North West corner of the main building
- Team two – commencing on the water treatment area to the South East corner in readiness for handover to remediation teams.
Stage 3
- Asbestos removal works continuing
- Soft strip activities continuing
- Demolition works by team one continuing working west – east in the North West corner to open up the main structure
- Demolition works completing in the South East corner and a separate CDM area constructed for the remediation works to commence.
Stage 4
- Asbestos removal works continuing
- Soft strip activities continuing
- Demolition works by team one continuing working now working North to South in the North West corner to open up the main structure
- Remediation works able to commence in the former water treatment area in the South East corner of the site. Separate access for remediation and demolition created.
Stage 5
- Asbestos removal works continuing
- Soft strip activities continuing
- Demolition works by team one continuing working now working North to South in the North West corner to open up the main structure and create space for slab removal team to commence works
- Slab removal team brought to site (circled red) to begin lifting slabs and foundations creating stockpiles on site
- Remediation works continuing in the South East corner
Stage 6
- By this stage soft strip and asbestos works should be completed.
- Remediation works should be in the final stages of completing
- Demolition works will have finished the entire Western section of the building and works will turn again from West to East starting at the Southern area of the site.
- Slab & foundation removal continuing with the top of the Sigma basement starting to be removed.
Stage 7
- Demolition works continue working West to East along the Southern side of the site.
- Sigma Basement fully uncovered, works will have started on the ramp section and back up the basement
- Full edge protection installed to guard the leading edge created
- All basement works are accessed via the ramp access.
- By this stage full agreement on back fill regime required

Stage 8
- Demolition works continue working West to East along the Southern side of the site.
- Sigma Basement fully uncovered, works will have started on the ramp section and back up the basement
- Full edge protection installed to guard the leading edge created
- All basement works are accessed via the ramp access.
- Crushing teams brought to site, backfill of the basements and compacting & levelling of the site will commence.
- Either sand or site crushed material will be used for the basement, the site will have site produced 6F2 compacted over.
- Full testing of material and CBR testing to the back fill will take place as works progress
- Jag Basement beings to be uncovered, this will require a ramp to be installed with crush material for access
Stage 9
- By this stage the full diversion of the power to the Waterton building will be completed freeing up demolition to continue through main warehouse area.
- Demolition works continue working West to East now along the Northern section of building.
- Both Sigma and Jag basements now fully uncovered and back fill will commence
- Full edge protection installed to guard the leading edge created
- Crushing teams continuing works
Stage 10
- Demolition works continuing working West to East
- Slab and foundation continuing behind
- Crushing, levelling and compacting of site continuing.
Stage 11
- Demolition works continuing working West to East
- Slab and foundation continuing behind
- Crushing, levelling and compacting of site continuing.
Stage 12
- Demolition works completing working West to East, high reach excavator brought to site to deal with final high level building, schedule has these works finishing before the nesting season beings.
