Gate Gormet

Former Gate Gormet Facility, near Heathrow

Hughes and Salvidge won this appointment through a competitive tender administrated by SEGRO’s Quantity Surveyor, Feasibility Ltd. The scope of works included, management of service terminations, asbestos removal, structure and slab demolition. Hughes and Salvidge Director, Ian Martin, said “We are delighted to work with SEGRO landside at Heathrow”.

By understanding the business needs of our client, this enabled us provide the most economically beneficial solution to the scheme. Our assessment of potential recyclable material quantities, based on our experience of similar projects, is being realized as the project progresses. Structural steel, aluminum cladding and non-ferrous metals from processing plant, all contribute to the value of recycled products.

In addition, the slabs and foundations will be crushed on site and a valuable resource to the new build. This will eliminate vehicle movements and use of virgin aggregates.

The Hughes and Salvidge award winning service has been built on specialist expertise and ability to deliver. We carry out demolition with the highest consideration for the environment and actively promote the maximum recycling potential of all our demolition arisings

Outokumpu case study

Outokumpu Stainless, Sheffield

The buildings on this 50 acre site range from large brick and structural steel mill buildings to office buildings, these together with decommissioned machinery, unused tanks and several large industrial chimney stacks form the above ground demolition scope.

Below ground is where it gets interesting!  There are basements and service tunnels below ground level and large open deep pits and ducts, the largest one affectionately named by the former Outokumpu employees as the V-Notch due to it being shaped like the letter V as it descends down spanning 200m across the site at an average depth of 45 feet below ground level. Tackling the 70 steps down to the bottom every shift will ensure that the 20 plus on-site Hughes and Salvidge operatives will keep fit on the job.

Once cleared of cables and equipment, these 30-40 underground voids will be safely backfilled with demolition arisings from the project.  One of the ways the environmentally conscious Hughes and Salvidge will reduce their waste to landfill percentage.
Its estimated that:

  • 20,000 tonnes of steel recycled
  • 1,000 tonnes of non-ferrous and other precious materials salvaged and recycled
  • 10,000 cubic metres of concrete crushed for use as backfill material on site
  • 98% of materials from the project will be recycled

Since the acquisition of Aasvogel Waste Management, K&B Crushers and H&S Metals, Hughes and Salvidge have established the competitive advantage offering a complete range of quality assured services from decommissioning, demolition, crushing/screening to waste management, metal recycling and remediation.

Operations Director at the Northern Office, Greg Lannon, who is contract managing the project commented:
“The nature of this project is where our specialist knowledge and safe practice really comes into play.  Having H&S Metals as one of our sister companies (specialising in non-ferrous/ precious metals recovery) Hughes and Salvidge were able to offer the client optimum return on the significant non-ferrous element of the project, maximising credit value throughout the contract.”

At its peak, this huge project will require 8 of Hughes and Salvidge’s in-house fleet of Hitachi 360 degree excavators with demolition attachments to rip through the steel work and dismantle all the structures.

Boldrewood

Boldrewood Campus, Southampton University

Hughes and Salvidge is also working on another high-profile project at Southampton University. As part of a wider £150m scheme to develop Southampton’s Maritime Centre of Excellence, Hughes and Salvidge are demolishing the landmark seven storey 30,000m2 former biomedical facility.

Here, over 95% of materials will be recycled or reused on site following the breakout of the basements, crushing of the concrete and backfill of the basements.  An extensive asbestos removal contract and a package of enabling works including sheet piling and land drainage to prepare for the new build is also included within our remit.

We completed phase 1 of this project, the demolition and asbestos removal of the former theatre, last year.  Working adjacent to a live university campus requires methods to minimise disruption.  Noise, dust and vibration are constantly monitored.

Celanese

Celanese Acetates, Derby

In May 2011 Hughes and Salvidge successfully tendered for the demolition of the HJK buildings and associated extensions for this global producer of speciality and intermediate chemical products.

As part of the Clarifoil operations on the Spondon Site, a series of plant modifications were being carried out to enable the Clarifoil business unit to become self sufficient and independent from the rest of the plant.

We undertook asbestos surveys, re-routing of services, removal of plant and machinery and careful and controlled demolition of the buildings.  The adjacent buildings remained operational and due to production processes taking place, hot cutting methods were restricted therefore cold cutting techniques were utilised in the deconstruction process.

The competence and expertise of our Management, the excellent past working relationship with the client together with our cost effective quote secured this work.
