British Airports Authority, Heathrow
TBD Maintenance Area
Working for British Airways close to a live aircraft area, the project included the demolition of post tension concrete beams and asbestos removal. The beams spanned the hangar doorways and, on paper, their removal represented a complicated process. However, through our ethos of early engagement and the skills of our structural engineer, the task was made both relatively simple and spectacular! A controlled dropping of the beam was carried out using two high reach demolition excavators, fitted with hydraulic demolition breakers. The landing impact was absorbed by a 2.5metre deep piling mat.

British Airports Authority, Heathrow - Terminal 4, A380, Stands 405 & 406
The demolition works for Taylor Woodrow included soft-strip and removal of link bridges to accommodate new aircraft. It also involved works to the Node buildings and ramped links. Attention to programme and health and safety elements are of paramount importance on any airport scheme. As always, the maximum recycling potential of the demolition arisings was achieved.
Project value: £230K

British Airports Authority, Heathrow - Terminal 1, Radar Tower
These works for Balfour Beatty took place adjacent to T1 Victor Pier. The radar unit’s steel framed structure was deconstructed and the electronics and rotating antenna saved for utilisation elsewhere. The deconstruction of the Node and VCC was stripped and demolished with a demolition excavator during the ‘night-time’ window. The live passenger area alongside remained unaffected throughout the works, maintaining the comfort necessary in achieving the best possible “passenger experience”.

British Airports Authority, Gatwick
Link Bridge, South Terminal
This project was required to allow Main Contractor, Vinci Taylor Woodrow, further redevelopment of the South Terminal. After cladding, insulation and roofing were removed, a 200 tonne crane was employed in a 3-stage lift. In the first stage, one end of the bridge was cantilevered and then lifted to the ground. A 45 tonne excavator fitted with a shearing attachment processed the frame for recycling.
In the next two lifts, the bridge was safety support propped, then cut and lifted. The section spanning the roadway was removed and processed. The final section was removed piecemeal using hot cutting and then processed to leave a clean site. All arisings were removed to a remote waste transfer station for processing and recycling.

GAL Maintenance Base, Gatwick Airport
British Airways commissioned Hughes & Salvidge to demolish various hangers and structures.
Working in conjunction with the Principal Contractor, MACE, we developed the Health & Safety plan to complete the £1.8 million programme on time and within budget. During this scheme, Hughes & Salvidge were presented an award from MACE, recognising our site team’s dedication to the practice of health and safety standards. The works included substantial asbestos removal adjacent to operational structures and staff car parks. This made the frequent high, winds round the site a problem factor. Working under the supervision of BA’s appointed analyst, the demolition took place without any reportable incidents occurring and no complaints made.
Project value: £1.8million
